Just recently I learned the frustration that parents go through while trying to find a safe snack for their child. After going to the allergy and asthma doctor we learned that our 3 year old son has allergies to peanuts and walnuts. We were referred to an allergist after an emergency room visit after our son ate trail mix. It was one of the scariest things that I as a parent has ever gone through.
After learning about my sons allergies I started checking all of the packages of the foods he ate – almost all of the snack foods had the disclaimer, “May contain nuts.” After organizing the pantry and placing those packages as well as nut containing foods up higher on the shelves, there were slim pickings left over. The granola bars that he loved to snack on were no longer an option and obviously his beloved peanut butter crackers had to be out of reach.
The Search for Safe Foods
I took to the internet to do some research and find some safe options for my son to eat. I came across the company Don’t Go Nuts and I was really impressed how their company was based around making safe and tasty snacks for kids with all types of allergies. The Don’t Go Nuts brands made their foods safe by avoiding a variety of allergens. With their brand you can expect:
- tree nut-free
- coconut free
This brand came to be with the help of a young girl named Lily Pinto who at the age of 3 she was diagnosed with nut allergies. Jane and Doug Pinto set out to make sure that Lily was safe from her life threatening allergies and at the age of 13, Lily became the co-founder of Don’t Go Nuts. Since they they have strived to create awareness and well as develop not only safe but healthy and delicious options for children with allergies such as her own.
