Ways to Save Money Other Than Couponing

Ways to Save Money Other Than Couponing

What if I told you there were other ways to save money on everyday products other than just couponing? What if I also told you that it could save you up to 90% on the items that you buy on a regular basis, coupon free.

It’s true, you really can, you just need to know where to start and I will tell you where, how, and what you should buy.  It’s quite simple to do and you’ll be saving your family in no time!

Your Biggest Expense

Let’s tackle the big one first – groceries. It’s something that we buy every week, sometimes a few times a week. What if I told you that there was a great way of saving money other than coupons and buying the sale items in the weekly ad.  You can save more money than that and I’ll tell you how I do it!

Find a discount grocery store! Seriously, these stores are the best place to shop. Their items are just overflow from the supermarkets. They get sent to the discount grocery stores and you get to buy the very same items that get sent to the supermarkets for a fraction of the price! To give you an idea of how much money you can save:

Item: Supermarket Price: Discount Food Store Price: Percentage Saved
Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt $1.00 $0.25 75%
16 ct. Pop-Tarts $3.59 $1.89 47%
5 lb bag of Cuties $6.99 $2.99 57%
Fresh Strawberries $2.59 $0.99 62%
Teddy Graham Crackers $2.99 $0.99 67%
Tropicana Orange Juice Family Size $5.49 $1.99 64%
Yoplait Go-Gurt 32 pack $5.99 2.99 50%

I have saved our family so much money over the past few years by shopping at discount food stores. The yogurts that I buy have an expiration date for 2 weeks out from the date of purchase and the fruit is fresh and delicious. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the food there!

In addition to food  you can also by toiletries and personal care, laundry and dish detergents – all at a fraction on a price!

Saving at the Supermarket

If you don’t have a discount food store around you there are other ways to save money on everyday purchases. Here’s how:

Shop at your own supermarket. Earlier I told you there were other ways to save money than using coupons and scanning the weekly ad and I meant it. You can save money by heading to your supermarket early in the morning and shopping then. While you probably won’t get deep discounts on center aisles where the boxed items are you can save some big bucks in the meat section. If I go to my supermarket in the AM then I can get my meat anywhere from 35%  to 50% off! I’ll give you some examples:

Item: Supermarket Price: Discount Food Store Price: Percentage Saved
Perdue Boneless Chicken Breast Family Pack $8.98 $5.50 39%
Organic Boneless Chicken Breast Family Pack $12.00 $4.98 59%
Perdue Perfect Portions $9.99 $4.69 53%
Beef Stir Fry $5.98 $1.25 79%
Boston Butt Pork 5 lb. $11.98 $3.20 73%
6 lb Pot Roast $7.68 $3.28 57%

The only catch with doing this is that the meat has a sell by date within a few days after marking it down. I freeze my meat for our meals ahead of time for crockpot meals anyway so this is no big deal for me. I have saved a lot of money buying my meats this way and it’s hard to buy meats at regular price anymore!

Don’t save just on groceries

Personal care items are also something that you can waste a lot of money on as well. As I mentioned above you can purchase your deodorants, toothpaste, toilet paper, and other personal items at the discount grocery store. But that’s not the only place.

Discount stores such as Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Gabe’s have a great selection for these items. As an example, you can see in my picture below that I can buy Skintimate Shave Gel for Women and Hydro Schick for men for just $1.89 and Crest Pro-Health for .99¢! Also at Ollie’s I was able to snatch up Aussie’s 3-minute miracle hair treatment for just .99¢! Gabe’s is a great store to buy deodorants and facial cleansers at for just a fraction of the cost of the big box stores!

Another really great place to get your grocery and personal care items is on Amazon. Amazon has a program called Amazon Prime Pantry and it is awesome! They have a coupon section that is as easy as clicking on the coupon and you’re all set! Recently I purchased Pantene Pro-V’s shampoo and conditioner combo for only $4.89 by clipping the provided coupons! The other great thing about this program other than the really great deals is that you can get it shipped to your door and have it in 2 days!

Great Ways to Save on Clothing

Another huge expense for families is clothing. It seems that the older the children get the more brand specific they get. It doesn’t have to break the bank! Shopping at discount clothing stores like Burlington Coat Factory, Ross, Gabes, TJ Maxx, Burke’s Outlet, Nike Clearance Store, and also shopping the clearance racks at every clothing store can save you a ton of money.

I have a select few retail department stores that I like to shop at. I’ll break them down one by one below.

JCPenney – They have coupons that come out monthly for $10 off $25 dollars and sometimes you can get $10 off a 10-dollar purchase as well. When I get these coupons I head to the store and shop the clearance racks for my children’s clothes and always end up getting 1 to 3 articles of clothing and only having to less than $5.00 out of pocket.

Belk – This store not only has great quality clothes and is known for their southern style but they also run really awesome clearance sales. They have red-dot clearance sales that go like this.

A price is marked down in red pen for let’s say $16.99. The red dot sign tells you how much additional to take off the last marked price. So for instance, an item that is originally $36.00 marked down to $16.99 with taking an additional 50% off is marked down to $8.49! Check out the picture below for the really cute tunic and legging set I was able to get my daughter for under $10!

Kohl’s – My most favorite store to shop is Kohl’s. They’re known for their coupons and their Kohl’s cash and there’s a reason for that. Between coupon stacking and clearance deals and earning store money in the process, this is a great way to save money.  I do a lot of my children’s school shopping here and I buy their backpacks at Kohl’s every year. This year I was able to get their bookbags for over 50% off after using coupon stacking and Kohl’s cash discounts. Check out the picture links below to see the backpacks I was able to get:

Using these methods to save money have really helped us out in difficult financial times. They have provided us a way to make ends meet; save money for items our children needed and have helped us afford family vacations. If you haven’t implemented saving money on everyday items in our life, start now! You will be amazed at how much money you will be keeping in your pocket and how much more you will get in return!

  1. I so commend people who take the time to shop wisely. I really do value money – I swear – but I’m just so lazy when it comes to grocery shopping. This does inspire me to make a bit of an effort though.

  2. Hey, Ana! This blog post was SO helpful! Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned over the years about simple ways to save money. I don’t have a family yet, but I’ve recently been thinking about how I need to practice how to live frugally NOW, rather than waiting until I’m married and have 4 kids. 😉 Practice makes perfect, I hear…

  3. Being a purchasing manager of a Hotel and Restaurant for 6 years I now have a vast range of experiences and ideas on how to cut some cents here and there, especially living in Philippines where you can haggle the price ☺️ when shopping for my clothes, O always go online instead of going in the mall, because the only place you cannot haggle the price here is the malls.

  4. Nice!
You really found some great deals!
I love your suggestions even though they don’t all work over here in my country (Croatia) !
I’m so bad at saving money but I’m getting better because I write down all of my expenses …. I can confirm its a really good advice!
    All the best xx

  5. Great informative post. I didn’t realize Gabe’s has things like toothpaste and toiletries. What discount grocery stores do you shop at? I’ve found one of the best ways to save money is to leave my husband and kids home while I shop! Haha.

  6. I am always trying to save money, I am forever buying the kids clothes for next year in the sales. I wish we had more coupons over here in the UK
